Avernum 3 Support for the Macintosh and Windows

Ostoth Weapon Bug

There is a bug when trying to get Ostoth (in New Cotra) to make the weapon to harm the Vahnatai. To be able to ask for this weapon, you need to take Berra (in Fort Emergence) the crystal shards you can find between the Barrier Cavern. Taking the crystal evidence from the Tower of Shifting Floors won't work for this (though it should). This will be fixed in any update after March, 2005.

Avernum 3 Support for the Windows

Installing From CD On Windows Vista

Some of our older CDs have problems installing on Vista, the newest version of the Windows operating system. If you have problems, follow these steps: Insert the CD. Open "Computer" in the Start menu. Right-Click on the CD and select Explore. Run the installer program (the application that has Install at the beginning of the name).

Other Macintosh Issues

Incompatibility With MacBooks With the GMA X3100 Graphics Chip

This game was written to run on Macintoshes running in Thousands of Colors mode. Unfortunately, the newest MacBooks (with the GMA X3100 graphics chip) do not support this mode. For that reason, this game is no longer supported on this hardware.

Performance Problem On Intel Macintoshes

Some users of Intel Macintoshes running OS X Tiger 10.4.8 to 10.4.10 have reported poor performance of Avernum 1-3. It's not a universal problem, but it isn't rare either. It appears to be due to a flaw in Apple's Rosetta software for running older applications.

This problem is no longer present in OS X Leopard. Upgrading to the new operating system will solve the problem, as long as your machine can run in Thousands of Colors mode.

Program Not Launching Correctly On Newer Macs

Some of our older games and installers will not run properly on newer Macintoshes with certain other applications installed. Trying to run the game/installer will give and error. This problem is caused by the name of the program not ending in .app.

To fix the problem, change the name of the program so it ends in .app. If you are trying to run an installer from a CD, copy it to your machine, change the name so that it ends in .app, and run it.

Screen Freeze Bug On Mac OS X

In recent versions of Mac OS X, we have received reports that the game's graphics will occasionally freeze for a small number of users. The game is playing in the background and sound effects are still happening, but the graphics are no longer refreshed on the screen.

We have created a workaround for this problem. First, download the v1.1.4 patch. Then, when the screen freezes, type Shift-R. This should enable you to resume the game normally.

If anyone finds a way to prevent the problem on your machine (such as identifying software that may be conflicting with the OS), please let us know at spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com.

No CarbolLib Error

If you get an error that you don't have CarbonLib installed, your machine is missing the software that let's you run OS X compatable application. Fortunately, you can download this software here.

How To Transfer Your Registration From Mac Classic to Mac OS X

If you are upgrading to Avernum 3 v1.1 and playing it on Macintosh OS X, your copy may become unregistered. That is because program preferences are stored in different places in Macintosh Classic (pre-OS X) and OS X.

To transfer your registration, go into the Preferences folder in the Mac Classic Folder and find the Avernum 3 Prefs file. Move it into the Preferences folder inside your own User folder on OS X.

Alternately, we can create a new registration key for you. Tell us (by email or phone - 206.789.4438) the name and address you registered under and the current registration code the game is giving you now.

Reactivating the Character Editor for Macintosh and Windows

You can turn off the character editor permanently. Should you have done this and want your character editor back, this is how to restore it: If using a Macintosh, throw away the "Avernum 3 Prefs " file in the Preferences folder. If using Windows, delete the "Avernum3" (or "Avernum3.dat" if you changed the settings to turn on file extensions) file in the Avernum 3 Data folder. (Note the Avernum 3 Data folder is hidden well by Windows 10. It will be C:\Users\WhateverYourUsernameIs\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramFiles (x86)\Avernum 3\Data\Avernum3.dat).

Please note if you have registered the game, this might unregister it. If your game becomes unregistered, contact us for a new key by calling 206.789.4438 or emailing spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com. There is no charge for this but please include the name you registered under, which game you need a new key for and your current registration code (located in the lower right hand corner of the title screen).
